Sonamarg, which translates to “Meadow of Gold,” is a stunning hill station located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, about 80 km northeast of Srinagar. Perched at an altitude of approximately 2,730 meters (8,960 feet), it is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and sparkling glaciers, serving as a gateway to the majestic Himalayas. Sonamarg is renowned for its pristine and untouched natural beauty, making it a favourite among nature lovers and adventure seekers.

During spring and summer, the valley comes alive with vibrant green meadows dotted with wildflowers, bordered by dense fir and pine forests. The Sindh River and its tributaries offer opportunities for trout fishing and white-water rafting. Sonamarg is also the starting point for treks to Thajiwas Glacier, Krishansar Lake, and Vishansar Lake, attracting hikers and explorers alike.

A highlight of the area is the Thajiwas Glacier, located just a few kilometers from the town. Snow-covered even in summer, it can be explored via pony rides or short hikes, providing ideal spots for snow play, photography, and experiencing snow in warmer months.

Sonamarg also holds spiritual significance as a base for the Amarnath Yatra, with the nearby Baltal camp serving as one of the main pilgrimage routes to the holy cave.
